Kalumbila: Solving the ghost town conundrum.

With Zambia’s largest copper mine in proximity, Kalumbila Town is always associated with mining activities for its sustenance. This is true for nearly every settlement in and around a mining operation but the lay of the land tells a different story.

There is a long history of settlements struggling after economic activity slows down and leaving towns nearly abandoned. Ghost towns emerge due to a range of reasons including depleted natural resources, a shift in economic activities to other regions. At times, residents choose to stay and businesses serving the community remain operational but with the main economic activity having ended, it leaves a town on the edge of despair.

The Happiest Town in Africa has a long-term plan to grow and thrive beyond mining operations. With investments underway and lined up in quality housing, healthcare, education, and commercial activities, Kalumbila Town Development Corporation (KTDC) is championing this vision for a town with over 12,000 residents.

Hard hats but not for mining! The town is seeing an increase in real estate investment, catering to and increased inflow of professionals and families.

By attracting investment in various sectors, KTDC is positioning the town as an investible destination, not only for its ideal location as the home of a significant mining operation but as a strategic hub for the growing economic activity in the North Western Province.

KTDC superintendent Michael Kabungo highlights a standout consideration for anybody looking to invest in the town.

“With the whole of Kalumbila Town sitting outside of First Quantum Mining’s Sentinel mine, it is well located to grow and thrive beyond mining operations. This enables investors to own property within the town and with the rapid economic activities in the region, it presents investors with an opportunity to get on to Zambia’s new economic highway,” he says.

What can investors expect in Kalumbila Town?

Becoming part of Zambia’s economic future is a great start. The town has officially been designated a Multi‑Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ) and this unlocks opportunities for visionary investors. And now is a great time to invest!
