Saving Lives, One First Aid Competition at a Time

Kalumbila Town has a charm about it that comes alive when we come together. In a bold move to prioritise Occupational Health and Safety, First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Trident Limited this weekend hosted an Interdepartmental First Aid Competition at Sentinel Trident School grounds in Kalumbila Town. The event held in preparation of the upcoming Intercompany First Aid Competition in June to be hosted by Mopani Copper Mine.

The competition showcased the skills, quick thinking and teamwork needed to respond to emergencies in a rapidly changing world.

The competition, themed “First Aid in a Digital World,” brought together teams from different functions and operational groups, showcasing their skills and knowledge in preserving life and promoting wellness. It also highlighted the importance of being equipped to respond to emergencies in a rapidly changing world. With 43 injuries recorded at the mine site this year, the need for effective first aid training has never been more pressing.

What made this year’s competition stand out is the participation of a local community team, demonstrating FQM’s commitment to extending safety beyond the mine gates. This initiative not only promotes community engagement but also underscores the importance of upskilling and empowering local residents in Kalumbila.

According to FQM Trident Limited Safety Superintendent, Daniel Kutontonkaya, “This competition is really not about the prizes or the medals. It’s about the participation and it’s about the lessons that are being learned. It’s about the fact that the people that came here as learners and beginners are going away as professionals.”

The event serves as a platform for teams to hone their skills, learn from each other, and refine their response to emergencies. As FQM prepares to participate in the intercompany competition later this year, the stakes are high, but the focus remains on preserving human life and promoting safety.

The company’s commitment to safety is unwavering, and this competition is a testament to its dedication to putting people first. As FQM strives to help achieve governments goal of producing 3million tons of copper, safety remains a top priority. FQM’s vision is clear: safety and sustainability go hand-in-hand. By investing in first aid training and promoting a culture of safety, the company is not only protecting its employees but also contributing to the attainment of the country’s sustainable development goals.

All participants went away with enhanced knowledge and skills that place professionalism at the heart of all safety efforts.

The First Aid Competition is more than just an event; it’s a reflection of FQM’s values and its commitment to preserving human life. As the company continues to push the boundaries of safety and excellence, one thing is clear: at FQM, people come first.
